De Koven, Reginald (Henry Louis Reginald De Koven), composer, director, music critic; b. Middletown, Conn., April 3, 1859, d. Chicago, 111., Jan. 16, 1920. ASCAP 1929. Educ.: Oxford 1879; musical education at Stuttgart and Frankfort; studied light opera under Gan6e, von Suppe, and Delibes. Doctor of Music Racine Coll. Returned to U.S. 1882, remaining until death. Collaborated with Harry B. Smith 1887, composed The Begum, first genuine American comic opera. Robin Hood (prod. 1890 Chicago by Bostonians; London prod. 1891 under name of Maid Marian, was written in collaboration with Smith). Several years later he wrote another Maid Marian. Music critic for Chicago Evening Post 1889-90; New York World 1891-97; New York Journal 1898-1906, World 1907-12. Member Natl. Inst. Arts and Letters. Conductor Washington, D.C., Symph.
